The Courage to Be Misunderstood
Freedom begins the moment we stop asking everyone else to understand our path.
One of the quiet lessons this life has taught me so far is that authenticity and approval rarely travel together.
There comes a point where we must decide whether we will build a life that feels true or a life that is easily understood. While those two things occasionally overlap, they often do not. The more I grow into who I am created to be, the more likely it is that someone will misunderstand me.
This is not because anyone done something wrong, but because every person sees the world through the lens of their own experiences.
The same decision can be viewed as courageous by one person and selfish by another.
Setting a healthy boundary may look like rejection to someone who benefited from having none. Walking away from something that no longer aligns may appear like giving up to someone who doesn’t know what it took to stay.
People rarely see the years of quiet reflection, the sleepless nights, the prayers, the healing, or the courage that came before a decision.
They simply see the decision.
It is human nature to fill in the blanks of a story we don’t fully understand. Sometimes those assumptions become opinions. Sometimes those opinions become conversations. And before long, someone else’s version of our life begins to travel farther than the truth itself.
That can be painful.
Especially for those who care deeply about others. Especially for those who naturally want to explain themselves.
But peace has a beautiful way of arriving when we realize that understanding cannot be forced.
Not everyone will understand why you changed. Not everyone will understand why you stayed. Not everyone will understand why you left. Not everyone will understand your dream.
And perhaps they aren’t meant to.
The people who truly know your heart rarely require a lengthy explanation. They recognize your character. They have watched how you’ve lived, how you’ve loved, how you’ve treated people when no one was watching.
Character speaks in ways explanations never can.
There is an incredible freedom in releasing the need to manage every opinion. Not because opinions don’t exist, but because they no longer become the measure of your worth.
The energy once spent defending yourself can instead be poured into becoming yourself.
There will always be voices offering judgments, assumptions, and unsolicited opinions. The world has never been short on noise.
But a life built on authenticity is quieter than that.
It doesn’t need constant validation. It doesn’t need to win every argument. It simply keeps becoming.
Perhaps courage isn’t always found in speaking louder. Perhaps courage is found in continuing to walk your path with kindness, even when others misunderstand where you’re going.
The people who leave the deepest mark on this world are rarely the ones who were understood by everyone.
They are the ones who remained faithful to who they were, even when they stood alone.
Maybe that is one of the greatest invitations life offers us. Not to be understood by everyone, but to understand ourselves well enough that we no longer need to be.
Notes to Nathan
There will be seasons when people misunderstand your intentions, question your choices, or create stories that simply aren’t true. When that happens, remember that your responsibility is not to control what others think of you. Your responsibility is to live in a way that reflects who you truly are.
Protect your character more than your reputation. A reputation is built on what people believe about you. Character is built on the choices you make every day, whether anyone notices or not.
Be willing to let time reveal your heart. The people who are meant to know you will. The rest may never fully understand your journey, and that’s okay.
Keep choosing kindness.
Keep choosing integrity.
Keep becoming.
